Where the $300,000 Figure Comes From
The number comes from Michael Bisping. In January 2019, he said former champion Rashad Evans told him Dana White had valued the old belts at $300,000 each. That’s a story passed along twice, and Fightful noted that the UFC hadn’t commented.
Bisping also joked that his two belts were worth $600,000 together. He even admitted he didn’t believe the claim at first. Later, writers added a $330,000 or $333,000 figure for the newer Legacy belt.One explainer from GroundedMMA calls the $330,000 number false, and argues the belts are gold plated, not solid gold. What Does a UFC Belt Cost to Make?
Making a belt costs far less than the headline values. Dana White said the BMF belt cost the UFC $50,000, and it was the most expensive belt the company had made. He said so at a press conference on 2 November 2019.
The UFC has said the Legacy belt costs three times the old Classic belt. One explainer lists the Classic at $16,000 and the Legacy at $48,000. Another estimates the Classic at between $2,000 and $16,000. These are estimates, so use them as a range.Materials add to the cost. The belts use gold plating, leather and metals. The Classic belts came from Dave Millican Belts, which also works with WWE, AEW and NJPW. The Legacy belt was a team effort between the UFC, designer Brad Flaherty and Jae El Manufacturing.
Classic, Legacy and BMF Belts Compared
Three belts cause most of the confusion, so let’s separate them. The Classic belt ran from 2001 to January 2019. It was round, and it weighed about 5.5 pounds.
The Legacy belt arrived in January 2019. It’s octagon shaped, and GroundedMMA lists it at 10.45 pounds. One site gives 2.5 kg, so the weight is not agreed. Each plate holds eight white stones, and a red one replaces a white one for each title win.
Each Legacy belt is personalised. The left plate carries the champion’s name, weight class and nationality, according to GroundedMMA. The belt also shows flags from the home countries of the first eight UFC winners. That detail makes it more of a keepsake than a plain trophy.
The BMF belt was made for the 500th UFC event. Jorge Masvidal beat Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in 2019 to win it. It’s an honorary belt, not a normal championship belt, and it was only contested once.

What Have UFC Belts Actually Sold For?
Real sales are rare, and they tell a different story. Georges St Pierre’s lightweight belt from UFC 94 sold for $55,527. The Canadian Museum of History bought it in 2019.The original 1995 UFC 5 Superfight belt sold for $43,200. It was never awarded, because the fight ended in a draw. In 2008, Ricco Rodriguez listed his belt on eBay at $29,999, and it got no bids.
That last example matters. A belt is only worth what a buyer will pay. So the $300,000 estimate, while exciting, has no sale behind it.It also shows how thin the market is. Only a few belts have reached public auction, so there isn’t a steady price to point to.
Why the Numbers Disagree So Much
If you’ve read several articles, you’ve seen clashing figures. That’s normal, and it comes down to three things.First, writers copy each other. The $333,000 and $330,000 figures trace back to the same claim, and one source of the Legacy belt weight says 2.5 kg while another says 10.45 pounds. Second, the counts vary. One site says Demetrious Johnson received ten belts, while another says nine extra ones.
Third, old figures stay online for years. A price from 2019 or 2022 isn’t today’s price. So when you read any number, check the date, the currency and whether it’s a sale or a guess.

Yes, in the Legacy era. GroundedMMA says a champion keeps the belt even after losing the title, and only hands in the plate to update it after a defence. Before 2019, champions got a new belt for each defence. TJ Dillashaw held five belts that way.
